Week ✌🏼 in Northern Sask!

Hello guys!

Another week in the books. Lots is happening with work, and it’s keeping me on my toes! There’s still so much to do in order to open the restaurant up, but it’s pretty awesome having the kind of position I do as I have been given the opportunity to have a say on things.

The lake has finally thawed people! It was super neat being able to watch it thaw. It gave us something else to do in the small town of Missinipe. This place never stops astounding me when it comes to its peacefulness and it’s beauty. For those of you that don’t know, Saskatchewan is not just flat prairie. It’s has a huge chunk of the boreal forest around 7% of it in Canada (https://www.borealbirds.org/province-territory-boreal-forest-facts/Saskatchewan). For those of you who are not familiar with the boreal forest you should google it! It is hugely important as it stores large amounts of carbon which is import for maintaining clean air and helping reduce the affects of GHG emissions. It also is the home to many creatures biotic and abiotic. Northern sask also contains a huge amount of lakes. If you zoomed in on a map of the province you would see how many freshwater lakes, rivers and wetlands there are. Saskatchewan often gets the boring end of the stick when it comes to Canada, but it’s a hidden gem!

One big update from the past week and a bit was that I got VACCINATED!!! I lucked out and was able to get vaccinated because I was living in northern sask for the summer (my first dose). I got moderna, and I’m stoked I finally have it. However, like most people around 12-24 hours after I did experience an achy body and exhaustion. It is very common, and it is typically how I react after most vaccines so it was not out of the ordinary. I just wanted to share my experience – please get vaccinated so the world can go back to normal and we can all explore and experience new cultures again.

I experienced something slightly different over the past week and a bit. I celebrated my 25th Birthday by myself for the first time. It was a little weird, but I tried to do something I enjoyed. I decided to have a fire pit and roast smokies and make S’mores. Both are a couple of my favourite things and it definitely helped me get through the day. I got many birthday wishes and I’m grateful for all of them. There’s just something weird about celebrating it on your own. It feels weird to be 25 honestly. I thought I would be somewhere totally different than where I actually am in life. I wouldn’t change anything and I know this is where I’m meant to be and is all part of the journey. One of my coworkers ended up stoping by On her walk and it was super nice to be able to get to know someone better that I am going to be working and living in a small town with.

Being in a small town and working full time at a resort limits the amount that I can do, which I was worried about. But quite honestly, I’m super happy up here. I’m not totally sure why, but I just feel at peace here. My anxiety has significantly decreased from when I was living in the city and probably because I’ve finally settled down a little more at work (it was also around +20 most of the week – got some of that ‘real’ vitamin D in my system). I am sleeping well finally which also helps – it took awhile to get used to the quiet. Overall, I’m enjoying life up here and I’m learning something new everyday. Tomorrow I’m going into town (La Ronge) to get some groceries, and I’m going to be able to see a familiar face from uni. It’s always nice seeing a familiar face, but shes also going to take me on a walk/hike to do some exploring! So I’ll keep you posted on that.

Nothing else to exciting has happened with my life this past week, but since I’m blogging about being up north and my summer adventures, I figured a check in was necessary!

Stay healthy, get vaccinated, and I’ll chat with you all soon ❤️
